For this male portrait photography session in Calgary, I created a special lighting setup specifically to practice working with flash. And of course, I invited one of my friends to be part of the experiment.
The main idea was simple. Try something different, work with controlled light, and see how small changes in lighting can completely change a portrait.
Experimenting With Flash Photography
Every photographer who wants to improve needs to try new techniques.
For this creative male portrait photography in Calgary session, I experimented with different flash positions and lighting angles. By changing the direction of the light, I could create very different results without changing the location or the model. Some portraits became dark and dramatic, while others showed more detail in the face.
This is exactly why I enjoy working with flash. It gives me another way to control the final image and create a specific mood.
Black and White Portrait Photography
I decided to keep this portrait series in black and white.
Without color, the focus moves toward the face, expression, light, shadows, and contrast.
Some of the photos use only a small amount of light to show the outline of the face. Others are brighter and closer to a traditional portrait.
The same person can look completely different depending on the lighting setup.

Techniques like this are not new, but I think they are still worth experimenting with.
Today, many photographers prefer working mainly with natural light. I use natural light as well, but I also like experimenting with flash and creating my own lighting setups.
For me, photography should never become repetitive.
Trying something new helps me understand light better and gives me more options during future photoshoots.
Sometimes a photography session is about creating photos for a client. Sometimes it is also about practicing, testing an idea, and developing new skills.
This session was a combination of both creativity and technical practice.
